About this tool
Change a still image’s format for a website, document, or upload form. This converter accepts PNG, JPG, and WebP, keeps the decoded pixel dimensions, and shows the resulting image and file size before you download it. Files are processed locally rather than uploaded for conversion.
How to use
- Choose a still PNG, JPG, or WebP file from your device.
- Select the output format. For JPG or WebP, set quality; for JPG, choose the background used behind transparent areas.
- Select Convert image, review the preview and size, then download the converted file.
Choosing PNG, JPG, or WebP
PNG preserves the decoded pixels without lossy compression and can retain transparency. JPG is often useful for photographs but cannot retain an alpha channel. This tool exports WebP using the browser’s quality setting and supports transparency. Actual output size depends on the source and browser encoder, so compare the downloaded result rather than assuming conversion always makes files smaller.
Transparency and quality
For JPG, transparent areas are composited onto the selected background; white is the default. PNG and WebP retain transparency in the canvas output. Quality applies only to JPG and WebP. A setting of 100 does not promise lossless encoding. Converting an already compressed JPG to PNG does not restore detail lost earlier.
Dimensions, metadata, and color
The browser decodes the source and re-encodes it through a canvas at the decoded dimensions. There is no resize step. Color management, orientation handling, and metadata may differ from the original file; camera metadata is not intentionally copied. Keep the source for archival work, print production, or workflows that require exact metadata and color profiles.
Limits and local processing
The tool checks the file signature and dimensions before decoding, then checks the actual decoded dimensions again. It rejects detected animated PNG and WebP files. There is no batch upload or remote-image URL field. Conversion stays in the browser; the tool does not store the source or output between visits. If the browser cannot encode a requested format, conversion reports an error instead of attaching the wrong extension.

Assumptions and limitations
- One still PNG, JPG, or WebP at a time; no SVG, GIF, HEIC, AVIF, PDF, or animated output.
- Maximum file size: 20 MiB. Maximum decoded image: 16 megapixels and 8,192 pixels per side.
- Browser image decoding and canvas export are required. Damaged files and some unusual encodings may fail.
- The output can be larger than the source. Metadata preservation, identical colors, and archival fidelity are not guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions
Can I convert WebP to PNG or JPG?
Yes. Choose a still WebP file and select PNG or JPG output. PNG can preserve transparency; JPG uses your selected background color.
Why did my transparent image get a background?
JPG cannot store transparency. Choose PNG or WebP to retain it, or select the desired JPG background before conversion.
Does conversion change the image dimensions?
The tool uses the browser-decoded dimensions without resizing. Browser orientation handling can affect how the source dimensions are interpreted.
Are images uploaded or saved automatically?
No upload is needed for conversion, and this tool does not save files between visits. Use Download to keep the result on your device.
Why is the converted file larger?
Formats use different compression methods. PNG can be much larger than a compressed photograph. Try JPG or WebP at a lower quality, or use Image Compressor for a target size.
