What can a QR code contain?

QR codes can encode website links, plain text, WiFi network credentials, and phone numbers for tap-to-call. A WiFi QR code lets guests join your network without typing a password. A phone QR code opens the dialer when scanned. When read with a phone camera, the encoded data opens instantly — bridging physical materials and digital content.

Customize colors and add your logo

Pick foreground and background colors from presets or enter your own hex values so the code matches your brand. Upload a logo to place in the center — the generator adds a padded background behind it and automatically uses high error correction to keep the code scannable. Keep the logo under about 25% of the code area for the most reliable results.

Tips for scannable QR codes

Leave enough quiet space (margin) around the code, maintain strong contrast between the modules and the background, and print at a size appropriate for the scanning distance. Use high error correction if you add a logo or expect the code to be partially damaged. Test the final output with your phone before printing at scale.

Worked example and verification

For a printed menu, encode the final HTTPS URL rather than a draft address, use a dark foreground on a light background, keep a visible margin, and download SVG if the design will be resized. Scan the exported file on at least two different devices, then scan a proof at the intended print size and viewing distance. The generator validates supported URL and phone inputs, escapes reserved characters in WiFi payloads, and limits payloads to 4,000 characters, but only a real scan confirms the finished artwork and destination.

Static codes and destination safety

A static QR code stores its payload directly and cannot be edited after export. It also does not make the destination trustworthy: scanners should preview unfamiliar links before opening them, and publishers should re-check that a printed code resolves to the intended domain. Avoid placing secrets in plain-text codes because anyone who can scan the image can read the payload.

Assumptions and limitations

  • A generated preview is not proof that every camera, printer, surface, lighting condition, or scanning distance will work.
  • Logos, low contrast, insufficient margin, dense payloads, distortion, or physical damage can reduce scan reliability.
  • Static QR content cannot be changed after export; a URL continues to work only while its destination remains available.
  • WiFi passwords and other sensitive text are readable by anyone who can scan or inspect the code.

Do these QR codes expire?
