The exact calculation
In percentage mode, tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100. In fixed mode, the entered tip is used directly. Grand total = bill + tip, and per-person amount = grand total ÷ people. The display rounds money to two decimal places, while the calculation retains the JavaScript numeric result before formatting.
Worked example
For a 120.00 bill, an 18% tip is 21.60. The grand total is 141.60, and an equal split across four people is 35.40 each. If 18.00 is entered as a fixed tip instead, the grand total is 138.00 and each person owes 34.50.
Check service charges before adding a tip
A receipt may already include a gratuity or service charge, and tax treatment varies by location. This calculator does not inspect the receipt or recommend a percentage. Enter the amount you have decided to share after checking local practice and the merchant’s itemized total.
Equal display shares can leave a rounding remainder
When a total cannot be divided evenly to the smallest currency unit, identical two-decimal shares may add up a few cents above or below the displayed grand total. One person may need to adjust by the remainder. The tool does not automatically assign that difference.
Assumptions and limitations
- Only equal splits are supported; individual orders or weighted shares are not calculated.
- Taxes, discounts, service charges, coupons, and currency conversion must already be reflected in the entered bill when applicable.
- Displayed two-decimal shares can leave a small rounding remainder when multiplied by the group size.
