The Data category treats 1 KB as 1024 bytes, 1 MB as 1024 KB, and so on — the binary convention operating systems use when they report file and drive sizes. Storage manufacturers typically advertise capacity using the decimal convention instead, where 1 KB is exactly 1000 bytes, which is why a drive can show less free space in your OS than the number printed on the box.
