About the Handiwork Percentage Calculator

The Percentage Calculator provides five separate operations: find a percentage of a number, express a part as a percentage of a whole, measure percent change, add a percentage, and subtract a percentage. The selected formula is shown with the result so you can distinguish calculations that are often confused.

How to use the Handiwork Percentage Calculator

  1. Choose percent of, part of whole, percent change, add percent, or subtract percent.
  2. Enter the two values using the labels for that mode.
  3. Read the result and formula, then check that the denominator or starting value matches the question you intended to answer.

Five formulas, five different questions

X% of Y is X ÷ 100 × Y. X as a percent of Y is X ÷ Y × 100. Percent change is (new − old) ÷ |old| × 100. Adding P% multiplies a value by 1 + P ÷ 100, while subtracting P% multiplies it by 1 − P ÷ 100. Choosing the correct reference value is more important than the arithmetic.

Worked examples

Twenty-five percent of 200 is 50. A part of 25 out of 200 is 12.5%. A value changing from 80 to 100 increases by 25% because the 20-point increase is divided by the starting value 80. Adding 25% to 80 also gives 100, but those two operations answer different questions.

Why percent change from zero is undefined

Percent change divides by the magnitude of the starting value. When that value is zero there is no nonzero reference quantity, so the tool returns an error rather than presenting infinity or a misleading percentage. The absolute starting value makes the direction follow the difference between the new and old values even when the starting value is negative.

Percentage points are not percent change

If a rate moves from 20% to 25%, the difference is 5 percentage points, while the relative percent increase is 25%. This calculator’s percent-change mode calculates the relative change between numeric values; it does not automatically label differences between two percentage rates as percentage points.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Percent change from a starting value of zero is undefined and returns an error.
  • Displayed results are rounded to at most four decimal places even though the internal number can contain more precision.
  • The tool does not infer whether inputs represent percentage rates, percentage points, currency, measurements, or statistical estimates.
  • Negative starting values can make business or scientific interpretations context-dependent even when the arithmetic is defined.

How do I calculate a percentage increase?

Use Percent change, enter the original value as From and the new value as To. For 80 to 100, the result is +25%.

How do I find what percent one number is of another?

Select Part of whole. Enter the part as X and the whole as Y; 25 out of 200 is 12.5%.

Why can I not calculate percent change from zero?

Percent change uses the starting value as its denominator. Zero cannot be used as that divisor, so no finite relative percentage is defined.

What is the difference between percent and percentage points?

Percentage points subtract two rates directly. Percent change divides their difference by the starting rate. A move from 20% to 25% is 5 percentage points and a 25% relative increase.

When are results rounded?
