About the Handiwork Counter
The Counter is a fast, tactile tally tool for tracking reps, scores, inventory, laps, and more. Tap the large + and − buttons, use label and step presets, set an optional goal with a progress ring, and pick up where you left off — your count is saved locally in your browser.
How to use the Handiwork Counter
- Optionally pick a label preset or type your own.
- Tap + and − or use keyboard shortcuts to count.
- Set a step size, jump to a value, or add a goal to track progress.
When a simple counter helps
Not every count needs a spreadsheet. A dedicated tally counter keeps one number front and center — ideal for gym sets, classroom participation, stockroom checks, and quick scorekeeping where you want large buttons and an always-visible total.
Your count is remembered
The current value, step size, and label are saved locally in your browser so a refresh or accidental tab close does not wipe your progress. Nothing is sent to a server — the count stays on your device.
Step size and jump-to-value
The default step is 1, but you can set any step size for counting by twos, fives, or tens, and every tap of + or − moves by that amount. Use jump-to-value when you already know the number you want to start from — resuming a count from a whiteboard tally, for example — instead of tapping repeatedly to reach it.
Goals and the progress ring
Setting an optional goal turns the count into a visible target: a progress ring fills in as you approach it and highlights once reached. This works for counting up to a positive target or down to zero, which suits reps-remaining, inventory pick lists, or a fundraising-style tally equally well.

Assumptions and limitations
- The count, step size, label, and goal are saved only in this browser’s local storage on this device — they do not sync across browsers or devices.
- Clearing site data, using a private/incognito window, or switching browsers resets the counter to its default state.
- There is a single running count per browser — the tool does not support multiple named counters or a saved history of past sessions.

Frequently asked questions
Does the counter save my progress?
Yes. Your count, step size, label, and goal are stored in localStorage under handiwork-counter-state and restored the next time you open the tool on the same device.
Can the count go below zero?
Yes. Negative values are allowed, which can be useful for tracking deficits, lives remaining in a game, or any situation where you count down past zero.
Can I set a counting goal?
Yes. Enter an optional goal in Settings to see a progress bar and a highlighted ring when you reach your target.
Are there keyboard shortcuts?
Yes. Press ↑ or + to increase, ↓ or − to decrease, and R to reset — as long as you are not focused inside a text field.
