About the Handiwork Online Notepad

Online Notepad is a clean, distraction-free place to jot down notes, ideas, and snippets right in your browser. Everything you type autosaves to this device automatically, so your notes are still here when you come back — with live word, character, line, and reading-time stats, plus one-click copy and download. No account, no uploads, no clutter.

How to use the Handiwork Online Notepad

  1. Click into the notepad and start typing.
  2. Your text autosaves to this browser as you go.
  3. Copy your notes or download them as a .txt file anytime.

Your notes stay private on your device

The notepad saves your text in your browser’s local storage, which means it never leaves your device and is not sent to any server. Your notes persist between visits on the same browser, but they won’t sync to other devices and will be cleared if you wipe your browser data — so download anything important.

A scratchpad for everyday writing

Use it as a temporary clipboard, a place to draft messages and emails, to strip formatting by pasting rich text and copying it back as plain text, or to keep a running to-do list. The live stats make it handy for hitting word or character targets, and the download button lets you save a copy as a plain-text file whenever you need it.

How the live stats are counted

Words are counted by splitting on whitespace, characters include a with-spaces total, lines count each line break, and reading time assumes roughly 200 words per minute, rounded up to the next whole minute. This is a fast, simple count rather than a linguistically precise one — it does not use Unicode-aware segmentation, so it can differ slightly from a tool built specifically for text analysis.

When to reach for the dedicated Word Counter instead

For sentence and paragraph counts, a no-spaces character total, or more careful handling of emoji and non-Latin scripts, use the Word Counter — it applies the browser’s Unicode text-segmentation API where available. Use the Notepad when you want a simple place to write and autosave; use Word Counter when the exact count needs to hold up under scrutiny.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Notes are stored only in this browser’s local storage on this device — they do not sync across browsers or devices, and are not backed up anywhere automatically.
  • Clearing site data, using a private/incognito window, or switching browsers can remove saved notes. Download anything important as a .txt file.
  • Local storage has a browser-set size limit that is not standardized to an exact figure; it comfortably fits ordinary notes but is not designed for large documents.
  • Word and reading-time counts use a simple whitespace-based method, not the Unicode-aware segmentation the Word Counter tool uses — short or non-Latin text can count slightly differently between the two.

Frequently asked questions

Are my notes saved automatically?

+

Yes. Everything you type is saved to your browser’s local storage as you go, so your notes are restored the next time you open the notepad on the same device.

Will my notes appear on other devices?

+

No. Notes are stored locally in the browser you used, so they don’t sync across devices or browsers. Use Copy or Download to move notes elsewhere.

Could I lose my notes?

+

Your notes stay until you clear them, but clearing your browser data, using private/incognito mode, or switching browsers can remove them. Download important notes as a .txt file to keep a backup.

How is reading time calculated?

+

It assumes about 200 words per minute and rounds up to the next whole minute, so very short notes still show a 1-minute estimate. Treat it as a rough guide, not a precise timing.
